Ron did some research on Bastrop so we decided to take a ride into town and check it out. The town proved to be just as the woman had told us. It is definitely an old time Southwestern town that has not seen change in many years.
Lock Drug Store was recommended as the place to go to get ice cream. Since Ron had not had the ice cream he was craving so we decided to stop in and get a cone. Walking into the drug store was reminiscent of our childhood back in the early 50’s. The inside represented the drug stores of the past with its original soda fountain , floors, shelving and display cases.
No significant changes since the drug store was built in 1912.
We ordered a double scoop ice cream cone and were shocked at the size. It was like eating a half-gallon of ice cream at one time. There was a lot of ice cream to eat but it was delicious.
After partaking in the ice cream we decided to take in the historic homes in area.
We stopped by to check out the old county jail.
Considering the age of the buildings in the area they have been well maintained and are in beautiful shape.
Walking around town proved challenging to to me at times so I had to make a choice – do the river walk or the bridge walk. So after some discussion with Ron I chose the walk on the bridge over the Colorado River.
We learn something everyday about US geography. We never knew that the Colorado River ran through Texas.
It was nice to see a small town that has been maintained and not torn down to make room for concrete and glass structures. We had a great day enjoying the bright sunshine and 75 degree weather. Tomorrow we will be exploring Austin.
