Day 31–Drive to Tombstone Territory RV Resort, Huachuca City, Arizona

We woke this morning to dark skies with black clouds hovering. I guess the weather report was accurate with the storm from the west coast rolling in.

We were on the road by 9:00 am hoping to miss out on some of the weather activity.  Initially it was clear but when we stopped for gas the wind picked up, gusting really hard and blowing the dirt against your skin like sand paper.

On I-10 we ran into our first experience with the dust clouds. It’s hard to see but the white puffs are known as dirt devils and they are moving towards the highway.

Hence the signs:

It was slow going because the winds were intense. Ron was fighting with the steering wheel to keep the MH stable. He had to slow down to around 55 mph just to keep the MH steady. Around noon we stopped at a rest area for lunch and watched the dust clouds block out the view of the mountains.

Back on the road presented us with new issues – torrential rain along with the wind. Fun, fun, fun!

We stopped at the Arizona Visitor Center and right across the parking lot was Aunt Annie’s Store known for its homemade apple pie. So of course we had to stop in and try it out. The pie was incredibly delicious and was served a la mode. We were good and did not buy a whole pie no matter how temping. We did purchase a bag of Arizona  grown pistachios. We never knew they grew pistachios in Arizona but I guess they have huge farms. We were told that the pistachios purchased in grocery stores are shipped in from other countries and are old, not like the fresh nuts from Arizona.

Back on the road again we ran into a four car pile-up slowing traffic to a halt. It looked like the pick-up rolled over but the other three cars hand minimal damage. Hopefully no one was seriously hurt.

After 9 hours fighting dust storms, wind and rain we finally arrived at our destination. We were able to secure a site and settled in for the night. It continued to pour with the wind not slowing at all.

Around 8:00 pm we decided we needed to get out of the MH for a while so we walked to the activity center in the pouring rain and dark to play some pool. One of the workers came in and talked with us for a while. After fours games (Ron won three and lost one) we went back to the MH for the night. We plan to go into Tombstone  in the morning and hopefully the weather will clear as predicted.
